outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

I survived the trip, but I get to return to get a cavity taken care of. I’ll be honest, I can’t remember the last time I had that done. I asked if I get a shot and they said yes. Mmm….pain killing shots….

I then took the afternoon off since it was sunny and 60 and went out for the 5ish miler again. I was rather sore from yesterday since during my plague I did little running..ok..no running. I did a really slow run today. Another 60 degree day tomorrow, and then on to about five cold days (at least that is the current forecast) with a chance of some flurries next week.

So many things are keeping me busy right now, especially getting my new “side site” up an running. When getting new sites up you end up spending lots of time looking for lots of new plug-ins that have been developed recently. There are so many. How many does one really want to use? If 5 people a day look at your site, should you spend 4 hours/evening playing with it? If a tree falls in the woods…

Oh well, it’s fun. It’s the village. The only other fun stuff to do around here is start shooting at cars or planning on blowing up a school (or two). Now, when is this place going to get stadium seating theaters, a completed ACAC, or even an Olive Garden?

So much to do. I just realized it is late and I’ve missed The Daily Show. Bummer. Today was a typical sunny 65 degree day here in the village in the middle of winter. The next two days should be the same. I ran today, but just for 5ish miles, since the plague hasn’t quite left me yet, but is mostly gone. I also have only worked out once in the past 8 days. For me that is torture.

Tomorrow I get that ultimate pleasure…visiting the dentist. Sharp metal things getting stuck in my mouth. I really am not a big fan of that.

Other news in upcoming days: heading off to the C-Ville Circuit Court for jury duty (I wonder if they let me bring my computer with me), helping out the TurboTax folks to track down a bug, and…OK…that is all I can think of right now. I need to sleep. Will I have nightmares involving a dentist?

The classic call from the 1980 Olympics is considered one of the best sports moments of all time. This seems more surprising to me: Smoking may be banned in restaurants in VA!

Today a no smoking law passed the VA senate. Now it is headed off to the house. Please…let there be a Santa Claus…or a ban on smoking in VA (at least start with restaurants, then move to everything else).

From that article the quote by the Republican senator was rather funny. I wonder if someone has told him that cig smoke is a toxin. I wonder if he would mind some DDT being used to get rid of the weeds by his kids playground. Very little difference.

artistic view of me in the mirror early in the morning

Ugh. Monday morning. So much to do this week. The sun rolls into the bathroom in the morning after my shower and I look in to the mirror. How will the day go? Will I have any energy left at the end?

My cold is breaking. I feel better today than I have for the past 8 days.

I think I’ve decided to start hosting my photos over on Flickr. The integration with WordPress continues to improve, and I’ll always feel a bit more secure having my photos backed up on a Yahoo server, rather than the good old iMac G3 from many moons ago. I’m going to get the Pro account so I can upload up to 20 gig/month. With RAW photos of 8 meg/shot it is more than worth the $25. I also managed to get DocMultimedia over at Yahoo. For a long time someone else had that name, but I guess they hadn’t used it in awhile.

I’ll slowly be incorporating new changes on the site in the coming weeks, but for the most part you won’t notice it. I’ve uploaded one other photo I took this morning to test things out, so feel free to jump over to my new Flickr home for my photos.

NYC

So they have 22.8 inches so far in Central Park, NYC. That is the place to be. If only I could afford that…

The fun of Flickr is that you can see some great shots by others. Here is one of a x-country skier in NYC that was taken earlier. That is definitely not the village.

Standard morning shot from porch
I wouldn’t want to forget the standard morning shot from my porch.

morning sunrise after storm
The sun is starting to poke through on my street as the snow begins melting in earnest.

saturday news on sunday morning
The newspapers are all from the day before. The church steeple is enjoying the morning sun.

The storm is over. The sun is out. Locals are heading for the few churches that didn’t cancel services. Almost all of the roads are clear, snow is rapidly melting off roofs, and a few icicles are kicking around. I did the walk around town from Belmont, over to the courthouse, up Park Street, back towards the Mall, and then to the office where I had to grab a few things to work on.

I’d guess they’ll say we got 8 inches of snow, but at the rate it melted yesterday I’d go with three inches on the ground. By tomorrow there will be none, since it will be well above freezing with a lot of sunshine today. Tonite they are saying 17 degrees, so there might be a few slick spots in the morning. Don’t slip on your back stairs…or your wrist may hurt for a long, long time.

A few pictures shortly…

I was going to head out and get some shots of the snow tonite, but there really isn’t enough to make it worthwhile. It is starting to let up a bit, and our current forecast is just for 2-4 more inches. Currently there is a slushy 2 on the ground, but very little on roads (although people here can’t drive in a drizzle, so stay off the roads!).

I’ll be up bright and early tomorrow (OK…9am or so) to see if there is anything worth talking about. Tonite I’ll head to bed early and let my plague continue (only another 1.5 weeks to go based on trends of other sicko’s this year).
