outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

So it looks as if all four of the teens (13, 13, 15, and 16) have been found guilty of planning to bomb their school. Don’t all young boys like to play with explosives? Do they still sell cap guns? Doesn’t that promote the study of explosives? What about going to war because we have big and powerful weapons. Perhaps society is more at fault for this one. Or not…

The dry year rolls along, and the Shenandoah National Park is now burning down. I went out for my 8ish miler today (my first run since the 10 miler) and I noticed the lovely odor of burning forest the entire time. My legs noticed the run. My right calf is still sore.

Up to DC for a long weekend for a wedding. Should be fun. I’ll try to snap a few photos while I’m up there.

I updated my old dual G4/800 to OSX 10.4 earlier tonite. It is still old and loud. Should I buy a new computer, or just buy a nice LCD monitor? I’m still debating on that one. The 20inch iMac is still looking might fine.

What should I do for my next vacation?

So many decisions…

Upcoming articles in the next month….Is C-Ville anywhere near the top small town in America? The dating scene in the village – is there one?

Since my legs are so tired today (actually just my calves are killing me) I got my server for this domain moved from a rapidly aging old iMac to a super cute refurbed Mac Mini. Without a doubt the cutest server ever (computer that is…). It even looks good with a martini sitting on top of it.

Hopefully the site will be a happy camper for several years.

After I drank about a gallon of water I took a few shots of people finishing.

The media was all about taking shots.

Everyone is waiting for someone, even Fido.

Where’s the food? Where is the Gatorade?

I kick back and think about the dreaded bike ride home, but am happy I made my goal.

So I biked over to UVA (about 3 miles) and that got me loosened up for the race. Then off I went. Within the first two miles I realized how warm the race was going to be. The first mile was around 7:40 and I felt very relaxed. I continued along the way trying to stay loose. I saw a few people I knew along the way. I kept up the 7:30ish pace for the first 6.5 miles or so, and then started feeling a bit weak until about mile 8.5 when I regained some energy. The mile 8 and 9 markers were the only ones where I was over the 7:30 pace by more than a few seconds.

In mile 8 I pulled my shirt off. The sun exploded on to the scene around mile 7. It was REALLY hot. I hate running without a shirt (being so shy and all), but I didn’t want to run out of energy. In the final mile I picked up the pace a bit, and finished in 75 minutes and 9 seconds. My goal was 75 minutes, although I had doubts I could keep up that pace for 10 miles. Very nice!

I then had to bike home (about four miles) along a few really long steep hills. My legs really started to feel it at that point.

Now I’m home, the clouds have settled back in (about 20 minutes after I finished the race), and I got a few pictures to share…which I’ll upload in a few moments.

As a note, the winning pace was 5 minutes 11 seconds/mile. Yowsa. It was also the largest number of runners in the history of this race (around 2300). I finished around number 180.

Oh it is so dreadfully early in the morning. I’m so tired I’m not yet sure how I feel. The race starts at 7:45 am (I thought it was 8, but luckily was told the correct time). With 2275 registered people I’ll have to get there early, and I wanted to nibble a bit before the race, so my alarm was set (the really cool iHome that my iPod plugs in to).

If you are out on the course, I’ll be the guy wearing a bright red shirt (from the MJ8k) with blue shorts and white socks. All American if you will.

My nose is running. I’m sneezing. I hope this is just a twinge of allergies and not the plague that has shut down half the schools around here.

Note: Current weather is a balmy 62 with a few clouds floating around. On the radar a few small showers seem to be about 40 minutes outside of town, but rapidly dissipating. Wind is gusting up around 24 mph. Looks like a windy one. Will we be running in to the wind when we hit the Martha Jefferson hill?
