outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

OK…I had to get out of bed and go walking outside to confirm it, but a few flakes managed to fall out of the sky. There is no evidence of it on the Hook’s webcam, and nothing visible on radar (not even any virga).

Enjoy it while it lasts…since sunny and 56 is the forecast from Sunday through the next nine days. Boo.

Looks like we have a 20% chance for a snow flake to fall from the sky early this evening. If anything happens I’ll be sure to get a picture. Five flakes would make for a blizzard around here. The rush for milk and bread will probably start around noon, so buy early.

It is always funny that every time the village is mentioned on the television it gets big media attention. The village was mentioned in Studio 60, by a character who is now pregnant. Funny how breeding and C-Ville go together. C-Ville…home of babies that have their diapers changed on dinner tables at local pizza shops. Add a kid to a show and it dies…I hope the character vanishes from the show.

Without a doubt the funniest mention of C-Ville on TV is when Macaca Man and his boys roughed up the whacky UVA law student and finalized his days in DC. Macaca Man will never die! That one was picked up nationally.

Looks like even here in the best city in America the KKK is spreading their word in one of the more upscale areas around here.

I noticed the article started out saying, “Some residents of an affluent Albemarle County neighborhood are bewildered and disgusted…” Why didn’t it just start out as “The residents…” Does this mean that some were happy and excited about the fliers? So Very Virginia.

I guess I should point out the fliers weren’t distributed in the ideal world of Charlottesville…where 22% of the kids in town live below the poverty line.

This village seems to be full of good drivers. Last year someone drove up the library steps in pursuit of the perfect book. A few months ago someone decided to make a U turn in the middle of Main Street and drove through a stone wall along the way. Today someone decided to take the shortest possible route in to City Hall. Perhaps to pay city taxes. Maybe the excess millions in the village budget can go towards repair of the stairs.

Drove car down stairs

Is this what is meant by holiday cheer here in C-Ville?

A witness told police a wheelchair-bound man was knocked to the ground at around 2:00 Monday afternoon. It happened at the intersection of Second and Water Streets. The witness said she saw four people approach the man and go through his pockets.

Police are looking for three men and a woman believed to be involved in the attempted robbery.

The Dolphins got back to reality and showed that they are a below average team as they got crushed and fell to 5-7 (mathematically eliminated…not sure…but good chance of that). The BCS system shows that the two best teams won’t be fighting for the national championship since the networks have decided Florida is better than Michigan (did Michigan really get worse while not playing?). It was pretty sad seeing the Florida coach buying people off on the news. Lloyd Carr took the proper approach and didn’t spend money to buy votes. My upstairs furnace isn’t working.

My Pfizer stock is probably going to drop by 25% tomorrow since their next superstar drug seems to have knocked off a few people in the final trial. I live in Charlottesville. I work for a bureaucratic company that tells you when you will take your vacation days. It hasn’t snowed here in about three years. Java Java still shows no signs of opening on the mall. There is no evidence we will ever have stadium seating theaters in this village.

I feel like I’m spending too much time with the givers of pain, and not the givers of delight. Brain and brain, what is brain?

What do these things have in common: a security guard, a neck, breaking of a crystal vase, a motor scooter, a “possible” ex-girlfriend, and the Marriot Courtyard? A simple day of holiday cheer at the Fashion Square Mall.

Elsewhere in the village (ignoring the McD’s shooting and the teacher going after his students) I saw my first good wreck at the new gym intersection of Garret and ACAC road. Two cars collided head on. There were two police cars, two wreckers, one ambulance, and one fire engine. I wonder when this intersection will get a four way stop sign. Even if it does, I have a feeling it won’t help, since the word stop seems foreign to the majority of people around here.

Perhaps the best example of that is at the bottom of the hill on High/Market/Preston where cars roll right through even though the stop sign is gigantic (MUCH bigger than the standard sign). I’ve been grazed a few times as I try to jog through the pedestrian crossing at that intersection.

I caught a bit of the UCLA victory today. Looks like Michigan may get a chance at that national championship after all. I personally think that OSU and UM are the best two teams in college football this year and look forward to the rematch. Go Blue.

Guess we’ll find out for sure when the BCS computer gets cranked up tomorrow.
