Do these two pictures look familiar?

You may want to check out this post from back in November. The two bikes were stripped back then. Not much seems to have happened since then. Do the owners care about their locks? Do they want the tire or frame back?
I just wonder how long they will stay there. Is this a good image for this perfect city? Or should someone go out and Pursue (criminals in) Charlottesville?

Why does Charlottesville even think it can be called a city, or even a village for that matter. In the heart of downtown it can’t keep the power on for more than one day without a flicker or two. If the wind gusts over 20 mph it is at least an hour.
Today it was four.
Typically in a downtown you expect to have power, except on the rare occasion when people fly large airplanes in to buildings in your area. I didn’t see any reports of planes hitting SNL (is that the biggest building downtown?), so why was there no power? Was DC without power today due to wind? Did the Windy City have no power for the last umpteen years?
Why does this village continue? I used to think I hated it. Now I’m beyond that.

So the wind made it up over 18 mph today. You know what that means…power outage. Currently more than 5000 people out of the 40,000 in the village have no juice (as the old expression goes).
Outskirts may not last much longer…batteries can only last for so long.
I hate this primitive village. I’d better go build a fire, sharpen my knife, and make sure I have a really big club. Bang bang, out go the lights.
PS. If power isn’t restored within one hour it may be the last of my days in this primitive region.
PPS. Why is it that I lived in many different places in the United States (bigger and smaller) and never experienced this many power outages. Must..kill…brain…to…enjoy…village…

I’ve heard that there is a meeting this week amongst the masters of the mall to discuss many things, such as when trucks can deliver things to the PEDESTRIAN mall (that has two roads running across it). Will this soon be the scene on the mall? Do all the drivers want to work in the late/wee hours of the day?

If you’ll notice in the photo, there is a lot of trash piled up. I really would like it if the village elders would get rid of the ‘no dumpsters anywhere’ policy on the mall (or at the least I’ve heard rumors of that). Currently piles and piles of garbage bags get placed on every single intersection on the mall. Every day I walk past piles of leftover food from the day before. Animals often get in to them and things get spread across a full block.
There must be a better solution. Right? Now, out to dig through the bags of goodies and see what I can find tonight.
And another good shot of trash.

While walking around on the historic downtown mall this weekend I noticed that several people were out conducting a poll. I took two minutes out of my life to tell them that the mall (and the village…and this state) needs to ban all indoor smoking, and make you stay at least 25 feet from the main entrance to a building. I love the smokers that put one foot outside their door and claim they are smoking outside. Ugh…I hope you killed all your children in a quick and painless way…and not with diseases due to sucking second hand smoke.
Anyway…I digress. While walking I got a chance to overhear another gentlemen answering the questions. How would he improve the mall you wonder? Let me tell you.
- Get rid of all this pedestrian crap. It used to be a road, and it should be again. There is no need for this walking stuff.
- Arrest all those tattoo covered youth. If you don’t wear a suit and tie during the day you shouldn’t be outside.
- Let us drive up to all the stores (this goes hand in hand with #1). Parallel parking should run right along all these stores.
- Get rid of all the northerners. We shouldn’t them them be down here.
- Get our road back.
The gentlemen was a fine old southern chap. Why doesn’t the village listen and go back to the good old days of TJ? And if you weren’t born here…what good are you?

The latest restaurant news includes the reopening of The Nook. Once again you can get all that good fried stuff with mayo on it. One of the new items on the menu is a $10 slice of meatloaf. That must be some really good meatloaf.
Over in Belmont the Belmont BBQ joint has now opened up. Something tells me it will do pretty well.

This was the highlight of the storm (or should I say YABS).

The sun went down and a bit of freezing rain has started falling from the sky. A 25 vehicle pileup has already occurred up on Afton Mountain (is that where some of those Walton’s lived?). If you want some bread you should head out there (walking of course…since no southerners should be allowed to drive). One of the vehicles was a delivery truck, and there are “baked goods all over the road.”
While power persists I’ll be sure to keep you in touch with the local situation. Or I’ll watch Idol…one of those things.
Just to keep up with the disaster you could also drop by these places:

Ice starts falling shortly after the sun went down (view from Water Street parking ramp).

A winter storm warning has been issued for the village. 0.7 to 1.15 inches of ice is the forecast. I’ll stick with 0.0. If we do get that much ice, we won’t have power for weeks, so this site will probably go down. I’ll be forced to hike out of this town and look for a new home. It could be a mass exodus. Will it be biblical in nature? Flying toads? Blood on doors? Ice in wine bottles?
Guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out.

Seems as if good old Phillip Morris (the big cigarette company from Richmond) has decided to cough up (get it?) 25 million to UVA. The money will get used for the Schools of Medicine and Commerce.
Is this so Phillip Morris can do a cost benefit analysis of selling cigarettes in this day and age where smoking is slowly decreasing in most of the United States and kids are getting fatter? If Virginia cranks up cigarette production will third world countries buy?
It was also stated that the “money will also be used to expand their (UVA) relationship with Phillip Morris USA on recruitment and leadership development.”
Does that mean that if you come to UVA Phillip Morris will provide you with free cigarettes for four years? Leadership of cigarettes?
I seem to recall just the other day when UVA decided to pass on twenty two million that was geared towards theater. I guess smoking is a higher priority. Puff. Puff. I guess I’ve inhaled so much second hand smoke that I just can’t believe UVA took money from a company that helps to kill thousands every single day of the year.
