outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

OBX

Quiet here on outskirts lately….I’m doing the Outer Banks eXtreme thing…soon to be on ESPN. Off season is really entertaining. No people at any of the touristy things. Can’t go wrong with that. No people that is.

Can I get recharged from this, or will return to the village suck all the eXtreme out of me?

Anyone else getting bored with the routine gunshots at the Outback Lodge? Why don’t they just use a flamethrower or grenade launcher? Seems to me that would solve the problem in one fell swoop. It always worked pretty well in the Alien flicks.

For those that read blogs don’t miss the big party at Crush tonight.

Speaking of crush, I’ve heard the place next door to crush (the as of yet unknown establishment) is getting closer to opening. Rumor has it that it will just be a bar, and not a restaurant/bar.

I personally think a nice Italian place with some rooftop dining (or at least the open roof) that featured wines from Crush would be a great addition to the area. But hey…another place to get trashed isn’t a bad deal either.

Any word on when The Box will open? Will it be smoke free? I spend about $5k/year on happy hour…does The Box want some of that?

The Omen (aka Mr. 666) seems to be dropping by C-Ville. Officials see bad omens for projects including 6 high-rises in pipeline, but will all get built?

Damien also dropped by Scottsville and 1/8/08 will be remembered as the day the postal service died. Can you imagine that big city without music or a post office? I wonder if this has anything to do with the never ending construction on their Main Street.

Speaking of never ending…how goes 3rd Street on the mall. Remember when that was going to be done. Perhaps some bones have been found. Maybe Rosemary’s baby. Dark days are ahead.

A shot from Kikis. iPod, iDrink, iBlack and White.

Has anyone noticed the interior design at The Box? It actually looks a bit like Kikis did before all that brown showed up. Anyone know when The Box will open? The olive green has martini written all over it, although I’m not a fan of olives.

Although not quite restaurant news, a place called Wash & Wag will be opening just below the Belmont Bridge in the near future. I assume it will was pets, but you never know. This is Virginia you know.

Update 2: The storm died out by 11am. Ho hum. 2.5 inches in an hour…and the melting then kicked in. But a lot of restaurants sure are closing up shop. Five Guys shut down earlier. Maybe they didn’t buy enough bread and milk.

Update: Cancellations are rolling in as the snow started to pour down in the village. More photos on Flickr in this album.

It has started. I’ll be providing live coverage throughout this storm…which has the chance to be the worst in the two decades here in the village. I’ll be sure to get shots of the crowds running through the streets looking for the last loaf of bread and jug of milk (or moonshine).

Dusting
Snow begins to pile up. Run for your life - buy bread.

So a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the village.

Precipitation is expected to remain snow through much of this
event. Total snowfall of 4 up to 8 inches may occur… with the
highest snowfall in the higher terrain. As the precipitation
tapers off… a light freezing drizzle will be possible. Temperatures
are expected to remain below freezing Thursday night so hazardous
driving conditions could persist after the precipitation ends.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow…
and ice are expected or occurring. This will make travel very
hazardous or impossible.

Is there any chance at all we actually get snow? I predict a flurry. Nothing more. Nothing less.

But if anything does happen…I’ll be sure to get some pictures posted of the chaos that we’d get with more than a flurry.

For those that missed The Colbert Report last night he is doing a three part series on trying to get a painting of himself in the Smithsonian.

A curator was leading him through the museum and stops to point out a really important display. TJ’s desk. The one he wrote that Declaration of Independence thing on. Of course Stephen took the proper approach and said, “Do you think TJ ever had sex with Sally Hemming on that desk?”

Was that joke in good humor? If you were a UVA cartoonist would you be allowed to make such a joke? I thought it was funny. Now…what do I think is the answer? I’d have to say no, since it was a very small desk, and TJ certainly wasn’t small…

Apple has style. Can’t wait for the keynote next week. A shot from Christmas Eve in NYC. The store was packed.
