outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

A local establishment that started up the same year I got here will be changing in 2006. What will the new sign look like?

Thanks for all the great years.

I went out for a three hour tour in search of an open coffee house. I wasn’t as successful as Gilligan (at least in syndication). I’ll write up and/or post a photo montage of that experience of wandering around the village when I get some time. One standard fixture near the Mudhouse was enjoying the cool, grey, drizzly evening on Christmas evening.

Downtown Charlottesville on Christmas day

Happy holidays, from the “Curious Guy” on the downtown mall.

The big thing that ABC television was pushing for Christmas Day viewing was two NBA games in high-def. Here in the village the only hope for HD ABC is via WRIC in Richmond. Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Richmond is the 4th largest city in Virginia.

As I sit here flipping on the TV to watch the Pistons I see the typical thing I see on WRIC. Low Def. Has the station run out of money so they can’t broadcast in HD for more than 1 hour per day? Can the leading station of the commonwealth not afford certain electronics? Why can’t WRIC broadcast their logo in HD (every time they show their logo they have to switch to low def)?

My guess is that the person responsible for flipping the switch is not paying attention to life today, since Virginia is such a depressing commonwealth. After showing the logo at the required time (and switching to low def) they never bother to toggle the switch once again.

It is really an embarrassment to Virginia and television. During prime time broadcasts they often end up in low def for more than 20 minutes out of a 60 minute broadcast of the top ranked show on television. Why doesn’t the parent network levy fines on the local stations that can’t broadcast properly? ABC should start some firing for the holidays. Start with the logo switch person at WRIC. After that, start eradicating all the local C-Ville stations that don’t plan to show HD until the government lays down the law….and I have a feeling they will just leave town when that happens.

We are #186 out of 210 measured television markets. Now that is the bottom of the barrel. C-Ville is the sludge of the television world. Sewage. If anyone thinks the south will rise again, think twice. It won’t happen. Even the technology of television baffles them.

So much for ABC getting a viewer. I won’t watch this miserable low def show which the rest of the US can see as a HD show. I’m begging the local stations to modernize.

UPDATE: As the entire day and night have passed, NOTHING has been in HD on WRIC. I believe it is time to waste some time observing the advertisers that pay for commercials on WRIC and trying my best to boycott all their products, and point out to others that they don’t care at all about consumers. WRIC should begin firing people immediately. If you are a television station and you can’t televise content, you need to be eradicated. I hope the grinch starts wahooing the people responsible at WRIC.

The smell of a morgue hangs over the village. All the people are sealed inside their boxes. Drizzle falls, washing away the dust that has been building up for weeks.

The stores that are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week are dark. No coffee shops are open. Milk and bread can only be had on the black market.

As drivers go out looking for an open store they don’t pay attention to the road. Crashes result. Sirens abound. Another day in the village.

There is only one game left in this season for the Fins, but St. Nick has done an amazing job getting the team back together again after Wanny destroyed the entire franchise. There is a chance they could finish the year with a 9-7 record after the dreadful 4-12 nightmare from last year.

An amazing turn around. I’m really looking forward to next season. Only 9 months away. At least there is one more 60 minute gift before this season ends.

It was around 60 today. It hadn’t been this warm for awhile. They are now saying tomorrow will be exactly the same. Sunny and 60. Not exactly a white Christmas.

I had said I probably wouldn’t run again this year, but with the weather I had to head out for my 8 miler. Let’s just say it had been awhile since I’d run.

I’ll be heading off to bed rather early tonite. Sore legs and a lovely overall feeling of exhaustion.

I’ve ranted about this before, but coffee shops should not be day care facilities. The screaming babies (aka breeder results) won’t shut up…and I’m not even at the “day care coffee shop” here in the village (there actually is one of those). What has happened to humanity?

I also think that babies shouldn’t be at happy hour at martini bars, but that is worthy of a separate rant on another day…

If it ain’t news it doesn’t get printed!

“… brought his camera to work to capture the first snow of the season December 6. Among the wondrous and beautiful sights, he saw three men on top of the Charlottesville Pavilion canopy shoveling snow.

And he wondered, What’s up with that?”

My name was mentioned on the local radio station this morning….further updates as needed…

Update 1: The photo I took of the mountaineers shoveling off the musical marshmallow got published in The Hook, along with a short description of my walk to work that morning. When the story gets posted on their site I’ll put up a link. In the meantime, be sure to pop by The Hook and take a look at life in C-Ville on the downtown mall. Notice the deer in the headlights! Must be close to Christmas.

Gotta love Lime Leaf. Best Thai food in the village. The place is always packed when I drop in to pick up my food. That is my longest drive of the month - about 10 miles round trip. At this rate I may hit 12,500 miles on my 2001 car in six months.

X-mas just a few days away. Current forecast, rain and 53 degrees. Not bad! It has been awhile since I’ve seen a cloud.
