outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

The local school system continues to modernize. Camera security will be set up to deter students from “misbehaving.” This makes total sense, since before the cameras students would develop plots to bomb the schools. Looks like two of the students have been found guilty. I’ll be cameras might help deter poop pranks as well. A gang prevention program is getting started this summer.

Modernization rocks, at least for news. Now, when is Adelphia going to get HDTV?

As usual, the Hook has another breaking story. Courthouse collapse in C-Ville. TJ wouldn’t be happy about this one, especially since the “students plan to bomb own school” trial has been going on this week.

So I did my 8.5 miler tonite. I didn’t actually feel very good, but I was pretty much tired all day. All that matters is how I feel on Saturday morning as I’m about to start the 10 miler. Looks like they’ll be around 2000 runners.

Tomorrow I’ll hit the gym for a relatively light workout, and then Friday I’ll do almost nothing other than my typical bike ride to work and a bike ride to UVA to pick up my race packet.

How far has James Brown fallen? He’ll be playing under our musical mountain this summer, as will Willie Nelson. What a pity.

Today I watched two trees in my yard get taken down by a tree guy. One had died a year ago. The other was actually a hedge that had grown in to a tree sized beast. Tomorrow the new shrubbery goes in (say that with Monty Python slant). Springtime and home ownership…the joy of it all.

Why does my to do list just keep growing. In the next week: run 10 miler, get taxes done (ugh…long story), work on improving social life (infinite challenge…one date might be a nice way to start), start keeping track of house expenses for taxes next year, be sure to be set for wedding trip to DC, get server moved to Mac mini, debate what next poll question will be, work, watch King Kong, get excited about Dolphins playing first NFL game of season and T-day game, plan a vacation or two for the year, shopping for food tomorrow, do laundry (very high priority list), give doc a call for appt, get cavity dealt with, update my photo of the day, pay bills, drive first nails into walls of my house to hang photos, buy curtains, buy bed, buy some minimalistic furniture, shave, watch Lost, respond to emails, find someone to do a bit of house siding work (or learn myself), read my Photoshop book that I bought the other day, write up a sequence of posts about dating in the village, buy a new iMac for myself, buy a new inhouse computer desk, find a financial advisor, find a tax person to look at my taxes (when I get them done), go to sleep…now!

I think it is time to burn my list…or maybe wait till after the 10 miler on Saturday.

OK..so I’ve been watching the Simpson’s since about 1987 or whenever it came on, and the opening credits tonight cracked me up. Is this the start of reality cartoon television?

Richard Fleischer passed away yesterday. He was the director for many classic flicks including Conan the Destroyer, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, Tora! Tora! Tora!, and of course Soylent Green.

Isn’t there already a painting by that name? The line at MudHouse is approximately 45 minutes long. There are about 20 kids running loose screaming in the establishment, and all parents believe their kids are the best, and doing things such as knocking drinks off tables (of other customers) is not a bad thing. Kids also run rampant at happy hour establishments. C-Ville: Home of happy hour for kids. I heard Charlottesville was voted the best small town in America for kids that go to bars before they are 10. I guess that goes well with the 3rd best wifi small town in America. Oh wait…I am here on a Wifi network…at Cafe Cubano (aka Higher Grounds).

I guess everything in this post is correct! Mmmm…vodka…

For the first time since 1995 (I think) I got under the 20 minute mark in a 5k. A sleek nineteen minutes and fifty seconds in the Run For Life 5k. I’m a happy camper today. Time for a hot shower.

A few weeks ago brand new trash cans appeared on the downtown mall. They are rather modern and sleek, and are also held in to the ground via posts in cement. Since then the old trash cans sat beside them, feeling inadequate. This morning they were taken away to the trash can farm, so I guess we won’t be seeing them again.

One of the old trash cans can be seen in this photo, next to the infamous cigarette receptacle that had ignited that day.
