outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

I’ve always heard that C-Ville is recommended as a great place to retire and many old people enjoy this village…but a 55 year old prostitute was busted in a sting operation (as well as some in their 30’s and 40’s). Prostitutes cruising the streets on during the middle of the week in the village? Why aren’t they home watching Day Break or Survivor? Jeeez…who would have thought the village is trying to compete with Vegas. Since we have the #2 city slogan and Vegas is #1 I guess we have decided to up the ante. So Very Virginia.

I was planning on running tonite. Perhaps I should look at more than the sidewalk.

Update: More on Operation Hook Up…and the unpaved parking lot of the Amtrak station.

A long time ago TJ (and his band of renown) built a boat. He had a few companions with him (if you know what I mean) and for the past umpteen years they have been floating through the village that was flooded in analog waves. The boat had no future.

Being the optimist, TJ continued to send a dove out every day to see if the digital landscape had made an appearance, and today it came back with a snippet of cable. Will TJ’s boat get to hit Mt. Pantops (home of Ararat’s Auto Superstore..trademark pending) in the near future, or will he just drift by?

Well…it seems TJ has been turning some water in to wine, and digital goodness may be appearing before May sweeps. Within 90 days the local stations will begin broadcasting with glorious HD signals. If that happens it will be equivalent to a revelation of some sort. Has Rosemary had a baby? Should I worry that my bill for lunch was $6.66? Can pigs fly? Will the tribal elders come up with a law to disallow this?

Days are being counted.

Since C-Ville is such of fan of married couples with 3.2 children it is easy to understand the lack of creativity around here since it has been shown that marriage and kids kill creativity in men.

Now..back to being creative!

So as you know, I always try to catch every new TV show at least once. Tonight is the pilot episode of Big Day. The description says, “Chaos and tension reign the household.” I’m willing to lay money I don”t make it through five minutes of this one…but that is what HDTivo is all about.

As for the big day, I played racquetball today for the first time in about 20 years. I can’t believe how sore I am. I wonder if I’ll be asleep before Big Day starts at 9pm. The muscles I used today have nothing at all to do with those I use for running…that is all I can say. Will I be able to move tomorrow?

Time to drink some green goo. Speaking of which, the master of City Centro will soon be running a fruit/veggie juice place inside Kikis during the lunchtime. Not many villagers (except the tribal elders and Waldo) enjoyed Liquid when it was around. I’ll have to provide my lovely recipe for my green greatness. Mmm….

PS. For those that haven’t been watching Day Break (the show running in the Lost timeslot), it is great. Really love it. Combines Groundhog Day with 24/Prison Break.

I just popped over to the Packers vs. Seattle game on MNF. I can’t believe how gorgeous the snow is. I think I saw some of that a few years ago. Early this evening I went running in shorts.

OK…the oddest story of the week involved a person trying to tweak a TV cable. Death was the result. Does that mean TV is bad for you? Parents should use this story.

Last night I was trying to change a few cables that ran on the back side of my mega media center (to hook up a 4228) and it was a bit tight. To see things clearly I needed a light (a lovely raw bulb attached to an old extension cord) which was pumping out lots of heat. The TV was also sending out waves of heat (big pictures require energy!).

If I’d slipped and landed on my little lamp with cables wrapped all around me it could have been an ugly scene…when they found me years later (of course the mortgage people would probably appear in about a month).

With all the shootings, stabbings, and robberies here in the village over the past few days the Daily Regress ran a lovely article about it. In it they mentioned another crime I hadn’t heard about.

Early Saturday morning, Charlottesville authorities charged a city man with cutting a woman with a pair of scissors.

I wonder if he had recently seen Running With Scissors. In any event, the summary of the article said, “We’ve had a slightly higher number of domestics [this weekend], but nothing drastic.” I guess the gang activity of teenage shooting is normal. I guess finding a dead man outside of the Salvation Army is normal. Can you imaging a drastic week? So Very Virginia.

As the sunny 70 degree weather settles in for the Thanksgiving weekend (plus next 10 days according to the current forecast) the local community erupts with happiness. Is that because it should be 55 degrees outside? Is it because everyone is happy in the village because of all the great cigarettes and perfect children.

Let’s see how much fun the village can be over the past few days. Your waffles…give them to me or I’ll shoot you. Your cell phone…give it to me or I’ll stab you in the chest. Your ’shady’ food…give it to me or I’ll shoot you.

I wonder if I should do some wash today. Your clothes - give them to me now. Or I might shoot you.

The Terminator

The Fins continued to roll along over a rather bad team. They now get a 10 day rest. I wonder if RB’s hand is broken (hopefully sprained). If then can win another 4 in a row the last game could be really interesting. Not easy to win that many in a row, especially when your team still has many problems…but there is always hope (at least until mathematically eliminated).

I ate a lot during the game. Tasty. Now I’m ready for a nap.

Naked Bike Awaits Turkey

While wandering around during the “village of emergency” situation last night in the darkened streets I noticed a bike that had been locked up was stripped bare. I’d guess one bike/day gets stripped here in the village. I took this shot shortly after the power came back on (at least the power for the moment).

Many years ago there are stories of bad days that included plagues of frogs, hail, locusts, boils, disease, and darkness.

Yesterday was one of those days here in the village. Unending rain, fog, freezing mist, darkness from lack of electricity, thievery, car/truck collisions, broken water mains, and long shopping lines.

Add flames to the mix. It seems a car decided to spontaneously combust on a main road. That caused the road to get shut down. I can’t tell from the picture, but was it a Pinto? Hmmm…So Very Virginia…or maybe ancient Egypt?
