outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

Historic Crossing

Click on the image to see lots of notes on the beauty of downtown Charlottesville. Garbage. Illegal parking. Discarded bikes. I’m so happy the village elders decided to keep it. The daily beauty continues to astound me.

The most expensive comedy ever made was filmed here in the outskirts of Charlottesville. Almost everyone in town was an extra in one form or another. I wonder if the fact that the movie was associated with Virginia is the reason it was a total flop at the box office. $200+ million to make, $32 million for the opening weekend. That has Virginia written all over it.

Evan Almighty Ark
Replica of Noah’s Ark sits in Crozet. Some ran towards it screaming…let me on…let me on…

As I woke up to another hot and humid day here in this summer (of which I already predicted will be a rather violent one due to all the beatings by gangs) I heard the typical morning drone of police sirens. The drone seemed to last much longer than usual, and more bees seemed to be involved.

I guess that is due to the fact that someone was shot to death late last night, and the gunman is still on the loose. I guess summer has started.

Breaking News: The Hook’s Blog has gone down for the count. The Muse seems to have gone off in to a suspended state of mediation, and is not really in motion at this point. Perhaps there are some IT people in motion.

Update: Someone moved. Site is up.

Looks like our friendly neighborhood sinkhole has returned.

Today the village elders will get together by the tribal fire and debate what to do about the temporary road (one of two) that crosses the pedestrian mall. Side note: how can a pedestrian mall have two roads on it? The road has now been open for a year. I’ve seen several accidents happen where the road meets Water Street (and pedestrians are constantly in fear for their lives) and forms a lovely intersection.

Accident on 4th Street

The estimate for making this a permanent 1 block long road was close to one million dollars (I’d love to be the contractor that won that bid).

Do you want this pedestrian mall to stay a road? Or go back to the good old days of pedestrian friendliness? I heard one guy say how he wishes it would just go back to the way it used to be…a road running the entire length of the mall so you could park next to the store you wanted to enter. Now that would be good old boy thinking!

If you have anything to say on the matter be sure you drop by the City Council chambers (aka tribal elders fire) around 7:45 this evening.

Charlottesville is notorious for making rapid decisions about new “ticket areas” around the downtown region. In some cases a sign indicating that no parking is allowed has appeared during the day, and a ticket was provided before the owner was even aware of the sign.

When the Norcross Station apartments went in some white lines were drawn to indicate parking spots on 4th. Since that day people have extended the parking region just a bit by always parking two bonus cars behind the last marked spot. Some of us debated the legality of those spots, but we always noted that there was no sign indicating you couldn’t park there.

So for the past year I’d never seen anyone get a ticket for parking there…until Friday. It seems as if those two “bonus” spots are now ticketable. Will a sign go up indicating you can’t park there? Or will white lines get painted for all the other streets that don’t have any? If I were the Honda owner I would fight this ticket.

Everyone who is anyone in Charlottesville is off viewing the world premiere of Evan Almighty on the historic downtown mall. Are you there? I’m not. I’m not worthy of the almighty (or at least the C-Ville elders…who rule this village).

I’m really getting bored with the local news. At least once every week a group of teenagers bonks someone upside the head. I guess this group had to be home by midnite…you know how mean those parents can be.

Facing the Storm

Storms were just about to roll through town. They seemed to obey the one way sign.
