outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

Seems as if the good old birds here in Virginny aren’t doing very well and have developed just a bit of a flu…for birds that is.

Image does not represent actual events in Virginia. Of course, it does look a bit like our sinkhole.

Yet another day of unbearable heat. So many people are cranking their AC’s that the mule can’t keep up. Power outages are starting to appear in the “historic” parts of the village.

Go ahead and charge it. I ain’t taking a lady’s wedding ring. Goodbye, Mrs. Bronson. Good luck to you. I’m going to try to get my family out tonight. Drive north. Canada, if we can make it. They say it’s cooler there. Not that it makes much difference. Just kind of…kind of prolonging it. Like everybody rushing to fix their refrigerators and air conditioners… Like somebody drowning in the ocean and trying to get a firm grip on a piece of seaweed. It’s nuts. It’s just prolonging it, that’s all. Lordy…Lordy, it’s hot.

Will outskirts go down? Will it run out of juice?

I think this is about the 9th straight week where at least one person has been attacked on the downtown mall by a group consisting of more than one (last week a UVA doctor and his buddies were mugged).

Last night had the biggest group going after the smallest group. 10 took down 1. Wow. The story even says it was a group of boys AND girls. What is the lesson here? Never be outside after 9pm.

It also seems as if that bunch of kids may have taken part in two other attacks in the same evening. Three attacks by a gang in one night!

Conspiracy fans might think these attacks are to promote parking in the overpriced parking garages near the mall. Perhaps this is trying to promote placing $300,000 worth of cameras on the downtown mall (can I have the job where I watch every camera on a gigantic wall of video?). Maybe this is just to promote local news (such as the mugging of ‘John‘), since so many stations (only one showing HD…the others refuse until the day analog gets banned) are competing for very few viewers to keep advertisers?

I’ll just stick with the theory that this is the summer of the red hour. Soon Landru will once again absorb the troublemakers so that C-Ville will once again have no spirit, no spark. Stagnant. Everything will be perfect. All will be happy.

Charlottesville is a great place to live for all of our citizens. Landru, what should I do?

Is there anything better to do here in town on a Friday night than watch live coverage of a satellite getting ready to be launched?

If things go smoothly it will actually be possible to get a decent number of HD channels here in this village. Once you’ve seen HD, you can’t go back.

Update (9:35pm): I never thought I would be so excited watching a satellite launch from the middle of a former Russian-ish country. The basic technology required to get a rocket in to space amazes me. The launch went perfectly. It will be about nine hours until the new bird is parked in orbit, and I’m sure a lot of testing will then happen, but so far, so good. Can’t wait for more HD from DTV.

I seem to recall a fight over the issue of who exactly pays to keep all the signs on the mall up to date. Something tells me money went somewhere, but not to update the signs…if you know what I mean. I wonder if the village will now start asking businesses that leave to pay for sign removal.

Subway...or 4 Minutes?

After Subway

I seem to recall Subway left about two years ago. Oh well. Perhaps the village assumes people can’t read, so no one will notice.

Today was a pretty good day for Apple. More information about the number of iPhones that got sold has trickled out and it is a large number. The stock went up 5% today. Good for me. If only I’d been really smart and bought TONS of it a few years ago. Hindsight…20/20…same old story.

Anyway, I finally got around to ordering a new (refurbed) iPod Nano and the Nike+Sensor thing so I can track my running mileage with it while listening to something along the lines of I Will Survive when plodding along.

I signed up for the Richmond City Marathon. I’ve never run a marathon before. I entered one once but yanked my knee two weeks before it. That was a bit more than two years ago. The marathon is the second week of November. I really hope it isn’t over 80 that day. I’ve started doing some swimming, doing longer runs, and doing some weights (especially for my legs). My goal…finish it in less than four hours. We’ll see how it goes.

Tomorrow morning I’m running a 5k. I don’t think there is another race here in town until September. Very empty summers around here.

Meanwhile…time to kick back on the couch and watch some of the Twilight Zone marathon running on SciFi Channel. That should help my training…right…

Update: Race was rather warm and muggy for 7:30am. 22 minutes. Very consistent three miles of fun.

White substance in C-Ville post office! Will it be something of interest? Will it be some flour left over from a post office party?

I was actually getting ready to rip on the downtown post office since the mailboxes continue to have more ludicrous pickup hours. According to the post office the last pickup during the week is now 4pm (that is the only one of the day), and on Saturday the world seems to shut down at 1pm. Perhaps someone else was also peeved that mail gets picked up around here as often as it did at the start of The Postman.

In any event…can the village make national news? I don’t think that has happened since the master of macaca babbled away like a good old boy.
