I continue trying to get in shape for the Richmond marathon in mid-November. I did a 15 mile run this morning at a 9:51 pace. I still have tremendous fear about the full marathon. If only I was 20 years younger, or was fit. Ugh.

I think that your fear of a full marathon may be irrational and actually counterproductive so GET OVER IT and recognize that you can and will complete the race! Your 5k times are excellent for a man your age. When you ran 15 miles yesterday did you have any unusual problems that may explain your “concern”? Do you have a goal time for the marathon or are you going to be satisfied if you manage to finish at any pace? If you keep increasing your mileage and get to where you can do at least two twenty mile runs before the marathon you should be fine. Last year it was hot in Richmond during the marathon and many of the runners had problems with heat cramps. Stop at the water/sport drink stations and take along a power bar or gel to keep your carbs and electrolytes up. I was on pace for a 3:50 finish but then I had extreme pain from ITB syndrome at mile 16 and it was all I could do to limp and hop to the finish line at 4:38. Now I stretch and use a foam roller regularly to keep at least that injury from happening again. I doubt I’ll do Richmond this year but I may change my mind. I did do 12 miles yesterday on the trail at Monticello at an 8:05 pace and I’m a lot older than you so just quit talking like a sissy and RUN!
