What do you think the downtown mall will look like after all the trees have been removed to reduce the cost of construction? Perhaps a bit like the renovation they did in the historic courthouse area just up the hill from NBC29.
Remember the lovely trees that used to be in that area? Now…lots of bricks. Or when the big tree in front of the federal courthouse what chopped down to add some 9/11 bricks around the perimeter. I’m guessing the bricks couldn’t be added unless the tree was first removed. That intersection is now just an ugly paved wasteregion. I’m sure they have learned from that. Right?
Anyway, can you picture a lot of stumps in the new mall?

Reminds me somehow of Joni Mitchell’s - Tear down paradise - put up a parking lot…
For anyone who is concerned about this issue, and the improvement of the mall generally, I strongly recommend attending the informational session being held at the Sage Moon Gallery, 420 East Main St., from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, Oct. 16). According to the flyer I actually received with enough notice to ensure my attendance, this is a kick-off session with staff from the design group in charge of the revitialization project. As a person who has lived and worked on the mall for 10 of the last 12 years, I can certainly say that aspects of this project are completely necessary (as in replacing the heel-chewing, ankle-twisting bricks). The rest? I want to hear more. And I won’t consider myself able to whine about the results later, if I haven’t make the effort to be involved now, when it matters. So, to those who can, do try and come by. No, I don’t work for the city. I just care about the future of the mall, its trees and the level of security which seems sorely lacking within its vicinity.
