outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

Who remembers last spring/summer when people were getting beat up by gangs, and at least one gun got fired in the downtown area every weekend? Those were the days.

One of the lose bullets went through a window next to South Street Brewery, and it still hasn’t been repaired. For quite awhile the hole was covered by a Obama sign. I really don’t know what the symbolism is. The sign came down this weekend. I wonder if that part is symbolic of the end of this democratic draw.

C-Ville recently approved a few projects that were going to drastically improve existence here in the village. Since then they have decided that nothing over 50 feet tall should be allowed to be built. I wonder if they are going to tell the new luxury hotel to stop construction immediately. Will they shut down the other three projects that wanted to be greater than 50 feet tall? So C-Ville. I can’t wait until the tribal elders ban indoor plumbing and that newfangled elektrickity stuff that makes the automatic candles.

It seems as if the tribal elders want to spend the one million dollars on new signs because,

Charlottesville is a hard place to direct people, it’s a hard city to learn your way around for one thing.

How fucking dumb are the locals?

Do they not have the ability to learn how to read a map? Are they boggled by the perfect city roads that the tribal elders spend hours and hours debating at village meetings? Just because every road changes names an average of once every 1.5 blocks shouldn’t mean anything. Things like that are set up because rich white people owned certain things back in TJ’s day, including roads.

Remember how much the village wanted to spend on 4th Street crossing the mall? They claimed that it would cost almost one million to let cars run across the mall. Since that day the cars have been permanently running along the street, and NOT ONE FUCKING PENNY got spent on that road. Why was that going to cost 1M? Why the hell should a sign cost 1M?

Let’s think about this reasonably. If the elders say we will spend 1M what do you think we’ll really pay? Every single project (such as trying to put bricks on a 1/2 block area) have run over budget and over time. Can you picture 2.8 million bucks getting spent on signs in the next 5 years?

Pay me one million. I’ll put up some signs for you.

I’ve put thousands in to my 401k this year, but lost tens of thousands. My stocks are down 40% in the past 3 months. It has become almost impossible to sell a house around here. Every day has more and more traffic going down my street. The economy of the US is collapsing. Gas costs $3.25 for a gallon (of course milk is more…so why complain?). Unemployment is up. Jobs aren’t paying anything. Criminal activity continues to climb in this area. Plowed regions that were under development are just laying dead as piles of dirt since everything has stopped.

Does all this indicate that the assessed value of my house should shoot up 14% this year? Does the city just want to pummel the locals into submission? Where is my money going? I haven’t seen anything improve…but I do see a ton of degradation taking place in the area.

Should I waste my time and request a hearing before an assessor? I’m sure the assessor would say something along the lines of, “well sir, after additional investigation we feel the assessed value of your house was incorrect, it is actually 41% higher than it was last year…sorry about the typo.”

I guess I’ll just lay here and take it. I really hope that C-Ville doesn’t use my tax money to provide “affordable housing” to anyone. If you want to do that, stop raising property values by an average of 18%/year for this decade.

Does this picture explain why we need to spend $138 million on our new bus system?

Trolley Gets Dragged

It always seems faster if you walk from downtown to UVA.

TJ once said, “Information is the currency of democracy.” Does it seem odd that the school he started is now the driving force behind legislation that believes “the currency of fundraising is denial of information.” UVA is in the process of raising 3B, but they don’t want us knowing anything about where the money comes from. Obama or Osama…should it matter? Probably not.

I guess TJ was pretty good with secrets…at least on the sexual front, so maybe his school should do the same with money. Then add some drugs and rock and roll to the mix and the party is on. Hoos your (sugar) daddy?

Let’s face it, you should never try to cross 29. As a kid in Miami I learned to cross on pedestrian overpasses. That was in the 70’s. I guess 70’s technology hasn’t quite made it to the village yet.

Our politicians have once again decided to do nothing about trying to ban smoking in restaurants/bars (I wish I was in politics getting kickbacks from the VA cig lobbyist…big bucks baby). Virginia really seems to like needless death.

OK…this is a fantasy, thus it will never happen. I’m sure locals will do everything in their power to keep this from ever happening. We don’t like roads that lead out of town. We don’t like outsiders. We don’t like those from “the north.” (For some reason I sure see a lot of bumper stickers saying the south will rise again.)

But at least one or two people are talking about a train to civilization running every single day.

The train will come, tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow, there’ll be trains
Jus’ thinkin’ about, tomorrow
Clears away the TJ hos and the waldos
’til there’s none

When i’m stuck with the day that’s gray and southern
I just stick out my chin and grin and say, ohhh

The train will come, tomorrow
So you gotta hang on ’til tomorrow
Come what may…

Every single year the state (aka commonwealth) level politicians pass laws so that ANYONE (criminal record, child killer, terrorist, child, insane, hungry, tired, poor, etc.) can buy a gun here without showing ID of any sort. We love guns. We make guns. This state is a bastion of guns.

Why on Earth are they wasting time going after a few students that brought a gun to school when anything with a pulse can buy one? In this town leaving your baby in a car a bit too long is not a crime, so why should bringing a chunk of metal to school be a crime?

The place is ridiculous. If you don’t love guns pass new laws, otherwise let people play with their toys Educate the kids, don’t arrest them.

The Virginny politicians continue to be boggled by how to ban smoking in bars and restaurants. Other places such as California, Colorado, NYC, France, Ireland,… seem to have no problem with this. Unfortunately, this is Virginny.

Driving back from the Outer Banks I noticed the biggest tourist attraction between here and there: the “cheap virginny cigarette stop.” It sits at the VA/NC border, just on the Virginny side. Them NC folks love to run up here and get their smokes. Mmmm…tasty. I guess NC wanted some bucks so they added a 1 mile toll road just to get some quick bucks from people zipping across the border for cigs.

The ‘Mr. Bills’ will probably go the way of Toonces.

I wish we could put all the VA politicians in that car if they don’t learn to function.
