outskirts: life and times in charlottesville

…small town life

Who remembers last spring/summer when people were getting beat up by gangs, and at least one gun got fired in the downtown area every weekend? Those were the days.

One of the lose bullets went through a window next to South Street Brewery, and it still hasn’t been repaired. For quite awhile the hole was covered by a Obama sign. I really don’t know what the symbolism is. The sign came down this weekend. I wonder if that part is symbolic of the end of this democratic draw.

Obama and the bullet hole

Free Tibet...

I noticed a few of these showed up in the village in the past few days. Is this some sort of political campaign? Maybe this was a prelude to the Ralph Nader announcement. How long will it take the village to cover it with gray? I’d go with less than a week.

Close Up Grin
This face smiles at you as you walk from the mall to Belmont.

How many more of these are around? There is one over at Barracks Road Mall I’ve never noticed before. Did that just show up this weekend as well? Any other reports?

Start of the end

I wonder if it will have a smoke free restaurant or bar.

Does this picture explain why we need to spend $138 million on our new bus system?

Trolley Gets Dragged

It always seems faster if you walk from downtown to UVA.

TV
A shot from Kikis. iPod, iDrink, iBlack and White.

Has anyone noticed the interior design at The Box? It actually looks a bit like Kikis did before all that brown showed up. Anyone know when The Box will open? The olive green has martini written all over it, although I’m not a fan of olives.

Although not quite restaurant news, a place called Wash & Wag will be opening just below the Belmont Bridge in the near future. I assume it will was pets, but you never know. This is Virginia you know.

tasty
Tasty martini at X Lounge.

Apple has style. Can’t wait for the keynote next week. A shot from Christmas Eve in NYC. The store was packed.

3rd Street on New Year's Eve
Shot from New Year’s Eve. Is this what First Night should look like?

This construction (on a half block) was supposed to be done months ago. I’m sure the city went with the lowest bidder and agreed to a pay-by-day plan.

C-Ville 2008

The village is gearing up for the excitement this evening. Kids will run everywhere covering the mall with silly string. I can’t imagine anything more fun than that!

Tomorrow I’ll give you my prediction for what will and WILL NOT happen in the village in 2008.

Update: The photo above got included in the NowPublic story on the New Year getting rung in around the world. Additional shots from the evening were also put up in this set on Flickr.
